Why You Shouldn’t Abbreviate the Year ‘2020’ on Checks

One Way to Avoid Potential Fraud in the New Year

By not putting the full year ‘2020’ on your legal documents and checks, you are increasing the potential for it to be fraudulently changed.

Whether or not the two digits ‘19’ or ‘21’ are added to the ‘20’, it can be advantageous to criminals. A stale check written 6 months ago can be updated to the next year and instantly become reused. A recent check can be back dated from a credit contract and you’ll end up with a higher debt payment. Keep in mind, checks are usable for about 6 months after it is written. There are many ways criminals look for a way to take advantage of people. It’s easy to just write out the entire year. After all, it’s only two more numbers.
