Weekly Mission Spotlight: SAFEchild

“Every child has the right to mature in an environment free from abuse and neglect.” With this statement, the Junior League of Raleigh established SAFEchild in 1992 with a bold mission to eliminate child abuse in Wake County.

SAFEchild (Stop Abuse For Every child)– supports families having a wide range of needs. Expertly trained professionals and volunteers build strong families in which parents nurture thriving children. SAFEchild annually serves nearly 9,000 children and families through parenting programs and the SAFEchild Advocacy Center and empowers 12,000 Wake County first graders through the
school-based Funny Tummy Feelings program.

FPC supports SAFEchild through the Mission Budget and by providing space in the Stock Outreach building for parenting classes. Many of the parents attending these classes are distressed and oppressed and have temporarily lost custody of their children. These parents’ backgrounds often reflect childhood abuse experiences, debilitating mental health diagnoses, substance issues, basic needs challenges, and social isolation. Through group activities and skills practice, parents learn new strategies for communication, positive discipline and relationship building with their children. These skills are needed to prevent neglectful and abusive parenting practices, as well as demonstrate their capability of being an empathetic, nurturing parent.

FPC members Matt Ferraguto and Hope Carmichael serve on the SAFEchild Board of Directors and FPC member Anna Jackson serves as their Special Events Coordinator.

The COVID-19 pandemic has only increased the need to keep children safe and provide parents with proper coping skills.
