Weekly Mission Focus: SAFEchild

Stop Abuse For Every Child

SAFEchild (Stop Abuse For Every Child) was established in 1992 and is the only private, nonprofit child abuse prevention agency in Wake County. SAFEchild’s mission is to eliminate child abuse in Wake County by helping adults and children create nurturing environments free from abuse and neglect. FPC supports SAFEchild through the Mission Budget and by providing space for the PLUS (Parents: Learning, Understanding, and Sharing) Program, a 12-week parent education and child abuse prevention program. Many of the parents who participate in the PLUS Program are distressed and oppressed and have temporarily lost custody of their children. These parents’ backgrounds often reflect childhood abuse experiences, debilitating mental health diagnoses, substance issues, basic needs challenges, and social isolation. Through group activities and skills practice, parents learn new strategies for communication, positive discipline and relationship building with their children. These skills are needed to prevent neglectful and abusive parenting practices, as well as demonstrate their capability of being an empathetic, nurturing parent. Learn more at www.safechildnc.org
