Filling in Gaps, FIGS, was established in 1982 by a group of Wake County residents, healthcare professionals, and churches to address a serious social problem: the need for prescription medicines for low-income people. 12 out of every 100 people living in Wake County do not have health insurance.
FIGS of Wake County is dedicated to improving access to prescription healthcare for children and adults who are either uninsured or under-insured, and people who may be eligible for Medicaid but haven’t filed for benefits. In 2019, FIGS funded over 20,000 prescriptions for Wake County residents. The organization continues to grow with the help of professional organizations, community leadership, and church support.
In 2020, there were over 110,000 Wake County residents without health insurance who could not afford their prescription medicine. Eligible applicants can submit prescriptions from a doctor or hospital visit to a FIGS partner, Urban Ministries Crisis Support, Alliance Medical Ministry, or Dorcas Ministries, and receive a voucher for the cost of their medication. Prescription vouchers are taken to pharmacies within the FIGS network and the medication is provided at no cost to the client.
FIGS donations fund the purchase of two thirds of all generic medications dispensed for patients treated at the Urban Ministries Open Door Clinic. $2.8 million of prescription medicine have been purchased for more than 200,000 Wake County residents since 1982.
