Stepping Out of the Boat: Ray Denny

Challenge: Reaching Out to Old/Not Forgotten Friends

In our busy lives, we sometimes “lose” contact with dear, true friends.

My interest was piqued by the Generosity Campaign challenge to “reach out to someone with whom you have been distant or estranged”. I had recently learned of a true friend who was going through a life-changing ordeal. We had not communicated in longer than I wish to admit. First, I had to find his current address, etc. I was successful in obtaining his address, but no phone, no email.

Next, I carefully crafted a letter, mailed it and hoped for a response. Two weeks passed, no reply. Finally, my letter was returned marked Insufficient Address. I changed the address to include a P.O. Box and re-mailed. Two weeks later, my friend’s letter response arrived! It was as if we had met and chatted the preceding week. We’ve now spoken by phone, truly re-connected and tentatively planning a visit. He seems delighted and I’m even more thrilled to be true friends again.

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me.”

John 14:1
