ONE Book ONE Church

A New Initiative for Our Church Family

Together we’ll read a common book and then have some great classes and discussion on the ways it intersects with our faith. To launch this program, we’ve selected the book, The Day the World Came to Town, by Jim Defede. It tells the true story of the planes forced to land in Gander, Newfoundland, when American airspace was closed on September 11, 2001. It’s a wonderful example of hospitality and how we respond to uncertainty and a fun read as you get to know these people from all over the world.

You can buy a copy of the book for $10 in the Edge Lobby or check out a copy from the church library. Enjoy reading this summer and then join us in October for a book discussion, a class taught by Ed McLeod on the theology of hospitality, and a special speaker. Plus, did you know the Broadway musical, “Come From Away” is based on this book and is coming to Durham this January. We’ll round out the program by taking a group to DPAC to see the show. You don’t want to miss out on this chance to build community and make a big church feel a bit smaller and share a great common experience with one another. Happy Reading!
