FPC Staff Show & Tell: Katy Schafer

STAFF MEMBER SINCE:

April 2017

MAIN JOB DUTIES:

As you can probably imagine, directing the children and family ministries of our church means many things! From organizing and planning our cherished annual family events like VBS, to coordinating volunteers and staff for the nursery every Sunday morning, the role Katy plays is essential to not only the functioning of our programs, but the care and undivided attention of the people in them. Katy is responsible for meeting the needs of children birth to 5th grade, establishing the Church School curriculum, coordinating efforts with our Child Development Center, and collaborating with youth and adult ministries of the church to provide opportunities for children to serve others.

FAVORITE PART OF JOB:

Every day brings something different, even for the most traditional events on the calendar. Katy enjoys the anticipation leading up to how children will react to her new ideas and loves to create something new and enticing to get their attention. No matter the lesson, or the activity, you can be confident that our children will learn about God in a fun and inspiring way. She thoroughly enjoys seeing the deeper connection made with parents, volunteers and children during the Pathfinders/ROCKstars program on Sunday evenings, when more time is spent in casual fellowship and open conversation. Her visits to families with newborn babies are also a beloved part of her job, as well as celebrating baptisms.

WHEN NOT AT WORK:

Speaking of children and family, Katy has her own accomplishments and challenges to speak of! She’s been married to her husband Mac for 26 years and they are parents of four youth, ages 20, 19, 17 and 15. She has the experiences and appreciation for all families, especially those with both parents working full time. Even when life pulls you in different directions, prioritizing worship with family is non-negotiable. She takes this responsibility to heart at home, and in her work with the church. She is a lymphoma cancer survivor, and can often be heard whistling while she works. In her down time, she has a blast thrift store shopping and selling items to the highest bidder on eBay! Life is full of surprises for Katy, and there is never a dull moment. She has an enduring, resilient spirit that keeps her moving forward – even to the front of the stage at a live music concert!
