George Shackelford, Jr.
The Congregational Life Committee is privileged to announce that George G. Shackelford, Jr. is our FPC Outstanding Older Adult Award winner for 2019.
A long time member of our church family George has served as a Deacon, four terms as an Elder and was recognized as an Elder Emeritus. An outstanding student and teacher of the Bible, the Vanguard Class benefits not only from his preparation and sound instruction but his trademark humor as well. George is married to the former Carol O’Briant, the first Director of Outreach here at FPC, and they enjoy their children, grandchildren and of course…baseball!
Although George retired from the North Carolina Department of Education, he started his career as a teacher and coach at Mebane High School where one of his basketball teams won the state championship. He still receives calls and visits from some of his former students who value his example and knowledge.
George is one of the leaders of the Early Birds, the men’s breakfast group that meets every Wednesday morning in Memorial Hall. He challenges us with trivia questions from vocabulary, geography and baseball, all presented with that Shackelford humor which is enjoyed by all.
Thank you George, we are proud to recognize you!
